CapX2020: Building Trust to Build Regional Transmission Systems

CapX2020 is an initiative involving eleven utilities in the Upper Midwest who collaborated together to invest $2.1 billion in over 800 miles of new high-voltage transmission infrastructure. Large-scale transmission projects are critical for the development of new energy infrastructure, but are notoriously hard. This e-case is designed to develop an understanding of why cross-sector collaborations are necessary to address large-scale infrastructure challenges in an industry in the midst of rapid change. The results clearly demonstrate that it is possible for utilities with differing business models to effectively collaborate on large scale infrastructure projects, and provide evidence that the best practices that emerged from the CapX2020 initiative can be replicated in future projects across the country.
