Beyond the Yellow Ribbon: A Reintegration Program for the Guard and Reserve
This e-case documents the grassroots movement by the Minnesota National Guard, starting in 2005, to create a reintegration program for Iraqi and Afghan combat veterans, designed to help them transition from warrior to citizen. This program became known as “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon”. The process of program initiation and growth, which was adopted as a national model in the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act, provides a variety of educational opportunities for public policy and public affairs students. The case is designed to introduce the audience to unique challenges of reintegration from warrior to citizen for National Guard and Reserve members, and the context of this problem as it relates to public policy, programming, and cross-sector collaboration.
